Skinny Bitch Book of Vegan Swaps Review - and (Closed!) Giveaway!

12 November 2012

Today is an exciting day at Pancakes and Beet Juice. I am very exited to share one of my new favorite reads and reference books with you and also host a giveaway! Because the only thing better than hearing about how awesome something is, is getting the chance to get some awesome for yourself for free!

To tell you how great this book is, I have to go back. When I first met Markus I was doing a lot of reading about natural health. I read a lot of aggressive, and, um, intense literature on the subject. The book that really helped me get a lot of great, relevant information was Skinny Bitch. This is an awesome book on vegan choices and lifestyle. It's a textbook's worth of information without at all reading like a textbook. After reading this book I really wanted to cut out animal products from my diet. I started using more substitutions and stopped eating meat for a little over five years.

My favorite thing about the Skinny Bitch books are how accessible and easy to read they are. My copy was on my bookshelf for years and it was always funny to see my friends pick it up when they came over. It's been passed all around my circle of friends. I actually have no idea where it is now.

A big take away from Skinny Bitch is that even if you choose to eat meat products, you can make substitutions at home or a few times a week that can have a big impact on your health, waistline and the environment. This concept really stuck with me and that is why I was so excited to see this new book, Skinny Bitch Book of Vegan Swaps, come out. The whole book is a reference guide to ways anyone can incorporate vegan choices into their diet.

My favorite parts of the Skinny Bitch Vegan Swaps book include:
  • Recipes! Including vegan chili and mint chocolate whoopee pie
  • 10 habits of a healthy vegan
  • Guides to the best vegan friendly grocery stores (there is a shoutout to my new fave Kroger!) and the best bets for vegan friendly foods at the airport
  • "Swap This for That" on many, many common foods that have animal products with tasty, vegan alternatives called out by brand for easy shopping

I think it is a great book to read if you want to get healthier with your grocery shopping, try a vegan cleanse or just have something on hand to know good alternatives if you have a friend or loved one with a food allergy or vegan preference! My copy is near the cook books in my kitchen and has already been used to adapt holiday recipes for our diverse gust list this year.

I tweeted @SkinnyBitch when I first heard about the book and she was gracious enough to write me back and send me my own copy to review, as well as one to give away to a Pancakes and Beet Juice reader!

  1. Skinny Bitch has been pretty life-changing to me, too. While I was on the pill, I started having horrible aversions and sensitivities to animal products. Thankfully I read Skinny Bitch on a flight out to CA to visit my in-laws and it totally opened my eyes and saved me and my food-loving ways. I also really love Skinny Bitch in the Kitch for not only its clever title, but also the recipes! I don't eat 100% vegan anymore, but I still love to eat that way more often than not. My favorite vegan product is almond milk.

I totally agree that it's a textbook's worth of information without at all reading like a textbook. Well said!

    Love this giveaway, Lilly!

  2. While I'm not vegan, I do live a mostly raw lifestyle, though...which has a lot of vegan similarities. As that's the case, I'd have to say I thoroughly enjoy all things spinach. Spinach smoothies, spinach salads or just spinach plain and all by itself. Popeye and I would've been great friends ^_^

  3. Just "Liked" your page on Facebook :) One of my favorite vegan treats is bananan "ice cream"- put frozen bananas in the food processor and blend for several minutes. You can add just about anything to this to change the flavors: carob chips, peanut butter, coconut, etc. etc. So yummy and healthy!

    1. Oops- meant BANANA ice cream! Sorry!

  4. Hi I have officially liked the Pancakes and Beatjuice fb page! Is that a cockapoo? I have a cockapoo named abby and she is the love of my life. My favorite vegan snake to make is Kale Chips! Thanks xoxo

  5. My favorite vegan snack is definitely kale chips! But I also love vegan chocolate-banana ice cream (where you just pulse some frozen bananas and cocoa in a food processor), and soy lattes!

  6. My favorite vegan foods are hemp force protein by onnit labs, and hemp milk by Tempt!

    I liked on facebook!

  7. My favorite vegan treat is homemade cheddar-style "cheese" spread on crackers.
