The Sweet Sound of Sleep - dOHm by Marpac Review, Giveaway and Coupon Code

23 April 2013

Wellness is definitely a priority in my life. Wellness to me means that when I am awake I have energy to get through the day without feeling like I have ants in my pants, I feel happier than I feel grouchy and I feel better than I feel sick. There are a few things that strike this balance for me: eating well (there was a big time difference in how "well" I felt after switching to a 100% gluten-free diet), regular exercise and SLEEP!

The right food, exercise and sleep are like my little wellness triangle, too much or too little of each throws the rest out of balance. And the biggest difference I can see with the food I eat and how much I'm exercising is how well I'm sleeping. Because if I do not get some quality zzz's, it is super bad times around here. I have been ordered to a nap by members of my household on more than one occasion because of how much an extra hour of the good stuff can affect my mood. And a sleepless night before work = forget it when it comes to getting things done. Sleep is my love language, and sometimes it is a torrid affair.

For someone who is so dependent on sleep for functioning, it is a precious commodity around here. Work stress, a squirmy pup sharing the bed with me, a large husband who likes to read his iPad in the middle of the night (talk about another triangle - the love one between Markus, iPad and I) and being a light sleeper in general keeps me up most nights. When Marpac asked if I wanted to try their dOHm NSF machine, the official sleep machine of the National Sleep Foundation and the original sound conditioner, I felt like I had won the blogger lottery  I instagrammed it as soon as it arrived (duh) and was excited to see that I had a few friends who grew up this this machine and still use them today! The fact that these products are all Made in the USA is also huge for me and something I make an effort to look for while shopping.

There's not many things you didn't get to see on the bedroom edition of our home tour, but one is Markus' mini bedside table. That's where I put dOHm when it first got to our house. The first night we had it, we had a big thunderstorm which usually means I won't be sleeping at all. I didn't wake up once!

There are two things I absolutely love about dOHm: the sound and the size. Nothing on dOHm is prerecorded, it is just a light, rushing sound of white noise that lulls the room and cancels out smaller noises that usually wake me up like the A/C turning on and off or other "house sounds." I have tried a bunch of different white noise apps on my phone but I always end up turning them almost all the way down because after a few minutes I've memorized the sound cycle and start anticipating the next sound instead of going to sleep!

I'm used to seeing large sound machines, but dOHm is the perfect size. It doesn't take up much bedside table space and is even easy to pack in a carry on bag if you want to travel with it. For sizing reference, Markus' bedside filing cabinet is a mini version from IKEA and I'm holding it easily below...

dOHm was already a member of the family by the time we left for Fort Worth later in the week for Markus to take the PE exam, so it came along with us! I was terrified when we checked in to see that most other guests at the hotel were staying there for a Nascar event and were loading up their bellhop carts with 30 packs of beer. If Markus couldn't sleep that night because they were playing Red Solo Cup on repeat down the hall, I was going to lose it. I never heard a peep after the lights went out in our room, maybe the Nascar fans were resting up before their weekend tailgating or maybe dOHm is just that good.

Either way, it is high atop the packing list on all future overnight excursions.

So after a few weeks of use, it is true that I did indeed win the blogger lottery by getting my sweet, precious dOHm courtesy of Marpac. Do not be jealous for too long, though, as I now get to pay it forward and give away TWO dOHms, one each to two lucky friends!

  1. It's always the little movements that disrupt me when I'm trying to sleep, like the windows creaking or my husband moving around too much. (And I can always wake up and tell when I didn't sleep well.)

  4. I ALWAYS need some sort of white noise when I am sleeping. I would love to have some actual white noise machine and not just a fan at night.

  7. I am a really light sleeper and I usually wake up to go the bathroom, because of snoring or rustling husband, air conditioning or fan. We live with our family so I also get woken up by dogs, blenders, vacuums, TV, and yelling up and down the stairs in the early morning. I know what you mean when you say that extra hour of sleep makes all the difference in mood.

  19. What keeps me up at night? Wiggily toddlers who creep into my bed at 2 AM. An 80 pound lab who sleeps at the foot of my bed to protect me from intruders. And the sound of the clock ticking in our bathroom, steps away from our bed.

  29. Both my children have white noise machines in their room. I place them across the room from them, about 6 feet or more.
They aren’t at the highest setting as I find it too loud. The down side of white noise machines is that you become dependant on them to fall asleep. Babies live their first 40 weeks with hearts beats, talking, grumbling tummies, digestive noises, and much more. It’s abnormal to a new born to have silence. Even a fan running across the room pointed away from them can be comforting. I’ve had white noise machines going in my kids rooms and been able to have parties in my home at the same time and people thought it was amazing my kids slept through it.
